602nds with Jens Voigt

Jan 26, 2010

Jens Voigt, riding with the successful Team Saxo Bank Professional Cycling Team would have to be one of the most popular riders amongst fans and the peloton. Always happy to oblige fans with photos and autographs, Jens is an all-round nice guy who is always happy to have a chat.

Jens is known and loved for his very aggressive style of riding and hard work ethic and is capable of attacking again and again in his effort to break away from the peloton. Jens is also very strong in one day races and smaller tours.

Jens’ affiliation with Australia began in 1997 with a professional ride for the ZVVZ Giant Australian Institute of Sport Team. In 1998 Jens started riding for the French team GAN which later became Crédit Agricole. He spent five years with the French team recording 20 wins before he joined Team CSC, as Team Saxo Bank was then known.

Jens has recorded many notable victories including three Tour de France stage wins. He abandoned the 2009 Tour de France in a sickening crash when he fell hard while descending the col du Petit-Saint-Bernard with the group of the yellow jersey during stage 16 incurring a fracture of the right cheekbone and concussion.

Jens chatted with 602nds about his childhood and the years growing up behind the Berlin Wall of the former East Germany. We were also given an insight into Jens’ plans with Team Saxo Bank for the 2010 season.

Jens took the time the chat with 602nds after Stage 4 of the Tour Down Under in Adelaide, South Australia.

    EDITOR’S NOTES:

Just thought I would give an insight into the background of this interview…

Jens was 602nds’ first interview of TDU2010. Notification of his availability was quite rushed and the location and set-up not ideal. Team 602nds was still perfecting the interview technique with questions from both CycleGirl and Wilko.

From this interview we have been able to learn and put our experience to better use in future interviews. Most importantly though, the interview shows Jens’ great nature and openness to answer questions.

    Enjoy…

Great interview! Keep up the good work.

    Regards
