602nds with Taylor Phinney

Jan 26, 2010

When Team 602nds discussed cyclists to interview, for me, Taylor Phinney was a must.

Taylor is a character and the type of person that cycling needs. He is the type of person that should be used to promote the sport, not only in the US but also worldwide. Taylor is a junior World Champion, a Paris-Roubaix U23 winner and more importantly a down to earth, good guy.

Taylor is the son of former professional racing cyclist Davis Phinney and former Olympic gold medal racing cyclist and speed skater Connie Carpenter-Phinney.

Taylor currently rides with the Trek Livestrong U23 Team and could not have any better guidance and influence than Lance Armstrong himself.

Being only 20 years old and specialising on the track in individual pursuit, Taylor represents the future of US and world cycling.

602nds hopes you enjoy our chat with Taylor as much as we have knowing him.

602nds: If there is one race you can win when you join the Pro Tour, What would it be?

Taylor: Ahh, Tour Down Under of course. I mean, are there any ProTour races that can even compare to TDU’s crowds, people, and overall magnitude? Yeah, I thought not.

602nds: If you could go out to dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?

Taylor: I would like to find some sort of an heiress to a large fortune and let her take me out to dinner. If I make a good enough impression maybe I could be set for the rest of my life… One can dream. She would definitely have to be good-looking though. Money is one thing, but looks are very important. Am I coming across as superficial?

602nds: Is there a question you have been wanting someone on Twitter to ask but they haven’t? If so what is it?

Taylor: I have been waiting for someone from Hollywood to contact me about voice acting in an animated film… I’ve always thought that I had a great face for voice acting.

602nds: What is your personal cycling goal for 2010?

Taylor: I want to win as many races as I can. Every race, you just have to sit back and think that someone from the peleton is going to be the first to cross the line… I know that in a lot of races I can be that person, so I will give everything i can in order to throw my hands up at the end. Winning is what it is all about anyway.

602nds: What is your all time cycling moment?

Taylor: Winning U23 Paris-Roubaix was the greatest sensation I’ve experienced as an athlete. the place has so much history, and I know it was only the U23 version of the race, but I raced it very smart and was so very happy to win. I only hope I can step it up to the next level quickly!

602nds: Do you have a ritual you do before all your races, or a lucky charm etc?

Taylor: I listen to a playlist entitled ‘Killtime’ that gets me super pumped. I listen to it before every major race and it definitely gets me in the right frame of mind if I’m not already there… I don’t have any weird rituals though. Well, none apart from my traditional Native American rain dance I perform in the middle of the velodrome. That’s about it.

602nds: Where in Australia would you like to visit?

Taylor: I have always thought Nicole Kidman was one of the classiest Hollywood ladies out there, not to mention gorgeous! So I’d probably just set up camp outside of her Australian residence. No, kidding. I’ve always wanted to go check out that massive rock, Ayers is it? Out in the middle of nowhere. Maybe I’d run into Outback Jack… That’d be rad. (602nds: Uluru, also known as Ayres Rock in NT, Australia)

Follow Taylor’s website and Twitter updates for a good laugh.
