Shiftit is a neat iPhone application to help you get to know your bicycle gearing. With ShiftIt! you can quickly find out what the effect is of the gear you want to use for a specific ride.

Select the size of your front chain ring (on a road bike this is typically 50 for the big ring and 34 for the small ring). Next, select the gearing for your rear cassette (typically any combination between 11-29 for a road bike). Then, select your optimal cadence (RPM) for your chosen gear combination. Shiftit will then calculate your speed in metres per second, km/h and mph.

Where Shiftit becomes fun is with its mountains feature. Most cycling enthusiasts are well aware of the legandary rides of the greats up the famous mountains: Pantani in 1997 climbing Alpe d’Huez in 36:05, Armstrong in 2005 at 37:36 and more recently Sastre in 2008 at 39:31. You too can estimate your climb times and marvel at how awesome the climbing feats of the legends really are.

Using the multiple gearing combinations you can find out what your time will riding some of the most famous mountain climbs in the world. Mountain climbs include famous climbs from France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium and USA. Notable climbs featured include Alpe d’Huez, Mont Ventoux, Tourmalet and l’Aubisque. Each mountain climb displays its distance, average gradient, maximum gradient and your estimated climb time.

Shiftit is more of a fun and interesting application rather than something you can use everyday. Neither the less it is free and can be downloaded through the Apple iTunes store.

Cyclists are typically an analytical bunch who like to compare their performances with themselves and others. Cychosis is a fantastic application for the Apple iPhone or iPod Touch giving cyclists a constant journal of each ride.

Cychosis can be set-up to keep a journal of all your rides on multiple bikes and keeps track of your total distance traveled on each bike. Your riding data can be easily tracked with vibrant and colourful charts that display your training and riding progress for Weekly, Monthly, Yearly, and All-time together with your distance, average speed, and time. Goals can be set for distance and your progress monitored against them.

Other information including Heart Rate Max/Avg, Cadence Max/Avg, Power Max/Avg, Elevation Min/Max, Gradient Max/Avg, Maximum Speed, and Body Weight can be tracked.

Your ride data can be easily shared with friends with Twitter integration that can be automatically set to tweet each ride upon entering your data. Ride data can be exported and saved as a CSV file to be used with external software applications such as Microsoft Excel and similar.

Cychosis’ developer, Ron Forrester is always happy to answer any questions and appreciates feedback and suggestions. Ron’s website features an online instruction guide and forum to answer all your questions.

Cychosis is a great iPhone application that is also iPod touch compatible. Cychosis provides a simple but comprehensive journal with some advanced features to keep all your ride data at your fingertips.

Cychosis can be downloaded via the Apple iTunes store for a low AU$2.49
